Journal history

In 1995, the editor-in-chief of the “Medicine” publishing house Academician of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences Nikolay Romanovich Paleev invited the Academician of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences Leo Antonovich Bockeria to get a new periodical afloat using his own discretion. The above proposal was kindly accepted. The name “Annaly Khirurgii” (Annals of Surgery) was proposed. Many well-known specialists were invited to the editorial board of the journal.

A number of topical sections were included in the editorial features of the journal that enriched the domestic professional literature. From the very first issues, the journal published the information on the scientific schools of outstanding representatives of Russian surgery. In particular, the first issue of the journal was dedicated to the great surgeon of the age, equally successful in abdominal, chest and cardiovascular surgery, the Minister of Health of the Soviet Union, the academician of the USSR Academy of Medical Sciences and the USSR Academy of Sciences, the founder and the first director of the Research Institute of Clinical and Experimental Surgery (at the present time Russian Scientific Center for Surgery) Boris Vasil’evich Petrovskiy. Subsequently, the journal published a collection of scholarly articles on the major scientific surgical schools in various areas of this specialty.

It is known, that there is an institute of the State Prize in our country for people from a broad spectrum of industries, including science. The research articles awarded the Lenin Prize, the State Prize of the USSR, the State Prize of the Russian Federation were covered in the journal. Сonsiderable prominence was given to the novelty and priority of Russian medical science in this particular area of surgery.

The journal publishes reviews, original scientific research, case studies dedicated to different areas of general surgery. Nowadays different surgical specialties have separate trends of development. Nevertheless, existing diagnostic methods, such as 3D and 4D ultrasound, computer and magnetic resonance imaging with contrast allows a new approach to manage comorbid diseases. Given the increased life expectancy, the incidence of comorbid conditions has increased significantly. The latest statistics shows that today there are more than 3 million people under 80-year-old in our country. Many of them need a surgical manual. The problems of diagnostics plan and staged surgical treatment as well as palliative or radical benefits exist in managing elderly patients. So, every surgeon needs to have an authoritative source of information on the above issues. Special invited lectures and reviews on the newest sections of surgical science and practice are published in the journal.

And finally, the most important editorial features include the papers from clinical practice: interesting case studies highlighting new diagnostic features, surgical treatment approaches and medical devices. The above sections reflected in the journal are of great interest for the investigative scientists and physicians.
